I took Adam to the Orthopedic today. He has had problems with a swollen knee for sometime but insisted it did not hurt. We went to the doctor in July and I heard three different versions from their office as to what the xrays concluded. So we went back two weeks ago since his knee now bends backwards (hyperextended) and he is admitting to pain, the last doctor we spoke to admitted he didn't have a clue what it was gave us a referral to an Orthopedic.
The following weekend my company switched insurance carriers. The referral had to be redone, and it pretty much had to be done by me, because no one could find record of me having insurance anywhere. I had to call Blue Sheild, then call the Medical Group, then call the Doctors office, then call the Ortho Center, some of those offices more than once, none of them would speak to each other. All in all about 2 1/2 hours out of my workday. It's a good thing I am pretty efficient at work.
Anyhoo, the visit today resulted in the doctor telling us Adam has no more PCL which is the ligament in back of the knee. She kept asking him if he injured his knee at anytime, and he repeatedly told her no. She was very insistent on an injury because a tear of a ligament is supposedly very painful. But as far as we know he has not had any injuries to his knee. I asked her if this could have anything to do with the Seavers disease he was diagnosed with a few years ago, which is a degeneration of the Achilles tendon. She admitted to not knowing what Seavers was (I like someone that isn't afraid to say I don't know), and would check with her colleagues on Tuesday. She said he will probably need surgery but that they would have to wait until the growth plate was finished so it would be about 1-2 years. In the meantime, she referred him for an MRI, and a hinged knee brace. No PE, or sports or running for at least one month and probably for quite some time after that. Even if he wanted to play baseball this year he wouldn't be able to. The MRI will happen in about a week and he goes back to the Ortho on November 3.
Thank you great grandpa!!
