I viewed the video and heard the song. I have a confusion about the impact of divorce on these couples. The song implies that divorce means separation, they will no longer live together. Unlike heterosexual couples, they would not break up. They will merely thumb their noses at whoever said they were not united and continue to live together.
That was beautiful. What a pretty song, too. I hear what Marcel is saying, and it's true - they will thumb their noses, and carry on. Still. It's kinda sad.
Yes, they can continue to live together but without the benefits of marriage. Without being able to be on each others health plans, without having the right to visit the other in the hospital if a "family" member says they can't, not being able to use FMLA benefits if the partner is sick, etc. I just found the following site called "religious tolerance" which lays out the rights that will be lost: http://www.religioustolerance.org/mar_bene.htm

ReplyDeleteDivorce is a poor choice of words, this is state enforced invalidation. You can see the difference between homicide and suicide.
ReplyDeletePer Colbert....The two women in Mass. filed for divorce based on irreconcilable sameness.
